Homage to Bashō & Houédard

In 1681 the Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō wrote a 17-syllable poem . . .

Furu ike ya
kawazu tobikomu
mizu no oto

which roughly translates as . . .

The old pond;
A frog jumps in —
The sound of the water

Then in the 1960s, Benedictine monk Dom Sylvester Houédard, an exponent of concrete poetry, gave his translation . . .

Frog
Pond
Plop
