So, if you haven’t had enough in these posts about Hipgnosis, the design group-cum-art house begun by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, – where I began my own career as an album cover designer – do try and get to see Squaring the Circle, the new documentary film about Hipgnosis directed by celebrated photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn, currently showing at Everyman cinemas in Britain and showing in the US on the art film theatre circuit.
This movie, Anton’s first documentary, is a terrific and honest film shot in his trademark black-and-white, all except for the album covers which appear, (of course!) in full and glorious colour. Talking heads in the film include Noel Gallagher, Robert Plant, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney and Graham Gouldman.
Several associates of Po and Storm – designers, photographers, illustrators and friends including myself, appear in the film relating their own anecdotes, memories and reminiscences of such a creative and often a very fun time in our lives – several tales of success, and, from time to time, excess!
Squaring the Circle is now available on DVD and Blu-ray from Amazon and other online stores and I’m sure it’ll be streaming on your usual TV channels before long.
