Public Image Limited – Happy?
Public Image Limited (PiL) released Happy?, their sixth studio album in 1987. John Lydon had expressed an interest in the work of Austrian / New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and asked if I would produce a piece of artwork ‘in the style of’ for the album cover. John’s brief was that he wanted the letters P, i and L to look like tall apartment buildings in the shape of a tear-drop.
The artwork was created using gouache paint applied with an air-brush and regular sable brushes on hand-made etching paper. I added in the colour strip and the colour chart (bottom left), the Japanese hanko (stamps) and the hand-lettering. In the end, these extras didn’t appear on the cover, just the PiL illustration, the hand-lettered band name and album title.
