The Who – Who Are You Super Deluxe Edition

The latest in the series of super deluxe editions from The Who is Who Are You, their eighth studio album, originally released in August 1978 and the last studio album to feature Keith Moon – surely the most rock and roll of rock and roll drummers. This new expanded box set includes seven CDs of material starting from late 1976 with an early live version of the title track, and includes the original album, remastered by Jon Astley, plus another six CDs of the never-before-heard Glyn Johns mix, studio sessions, demos, run-throughs and out-takes, rehearsals at Shepperton studios in 1977, plus recordings made at Shepperton in 1978 and filmed for the documentary The Kids Are Alright. Also included are rehearsal tracks made in 1979, following the death of Keith Moon, with new drummer Kenney Jones and two CDs of live tracks from the autumn 1979 tour of the US. And lastly, the eighth disc is a Blu-ray audio disk of the original album plus bonus tracks in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo mixes by Steven Wilson.

The eight discs and their CD wallets are housed in a gatefold disc-holder, accompanied by a 100-page hardback book with sleeve notes and track-by-track annotations by Matt Kent. The book and disc-holder are contained in a hard slipcase. The front cover of the book features a matt-black background with large, bold WHO ARE YOU type in bright yellow with a spot gloss varnish and the de-bossed centre panel holds  mirrored silver foil, the concept based on a design of in-store displays for the original 1978 US release of Who Are You.

The colour palette of the Super Deluxe Edition package design is red, yellow and blue – based on a stack of three rolls of electrical tape tucked away in the top left corner of the album’s back cover photo.
